MERCANTOUR (Roya Bévéra)
Human Influence: An unique cultural heritage

The exceptional prehistoric sanctuary of the Vallée des Merveilles contains one of the richest collections of open-air rock carvings in Europe.

More than 30 000 Bronze Age rock carvings dating from between 1800 and 1500 B.C., are grouped in a 12 km2 area around Mont Bégo. The entire Merveilles site, made up of the Vallée des Merveilles and the Cirque du Fontanalbe, is classified as a Historic Monument. The Fontanalbe and Arpette valleys are protected areas subject to strict regulations.

Visits may be made in the company of official guides registered with the Park and the Tende local authority.
