

Picturesque
village of the country of Menton, Castellar stretches
from North to South on the "Saint Sebastien" hill.
In
1435, the lords of "Lascaris" who held this fief, reach
an agreement with the occupants of the village, then catched
at an altitude of 870 meters in North of the slopes of
the "Ormea", in order to be transfered om a more convenient
place, the "Saint Sebastien" hill, in order that they
build 29 houses with same height and same width and fortify
these houses with an external surrounding wall. From these
shaven fortifications remain only two remnants.
The
"Lascaris Palace" (XVII century) is situated in
the North of the "Republique" street. The restoration
is in progress.
The
communal "Oil Crusher", dating from 1947, is one
of the last of the area, and treats the local production
of olives.
"L’Eglise
Parroissiale" :Contemporary with the constrution of
the village (at the end of the XV or the XVI century),
dedicated to "Saint Pierre", rebuilt during the XVIII
century with its bell tower with baroque style. Inside
are catched some paints of the XVI and XIX century.
"Chapelle
du Saint Esprit" (XVII century)
"Chapelle
Notre Mère des Miséricordes": Surmounted by a little
baroque pimnacle, curled by an elegant little dome of
the XVIII century.
"Chapelle
Saint Bernard" , with medieval origin, situated at
an altitude of 760 meters in the mountain, from one hour
walking of the village by the way "GR 52". It shows the
road that take "Bernard de Clairevaux" for preach the
crusades and advise popes.
"Chapelle
Saint Sébastien", last Roman chapel in the East of
the area, inscribed to the additionnal inventory of the
historic monuments, in progress of restoration. It belongs
to the late Roman style (at the end of the XII century,
beginnig of the XIII century). It has been built before
the shift of the village.
